Political morality
Do we still know what we mean by the cliché expression ‘liberal democracy’? Around the world, from the US to Australia, the so-called ‘Westminster model’ on which many democracies are based is facing strains that show how much the constitutional underpinnings of that model need reform and refreshment. Using John Stuart Mill’s concept of ‘constitutional morality’ A. C. Grayling argues for the minimum conditions that any workable constitution requires to be genuinely democratic in a world of increasing challenges.
A. C. GRAYLING CBE is the Master of the New College of the Humanities, London, and its Professor of Philosophy. He is the author of over thirty books of philosophy, biography, history of ideas, and essays.

Everybody lies
What the internet can tell us about who we really are
“The everyday act of typing a word or phrase into a compact, rectangular box leaves a small trace of truth that, when multiplied by millions, eventually reveals profound realities.”
By the end of an average day, human beings searching the internet amass eight trillion gigabytes of data. In these Internet searches, people confess their secrets, about sexless marriages, mental health problems, even racist views.
This huge database of secrets – unprecedented in human history – offers astonishing, even revolutionary, insights into humankind. Could this just be the most important dataset ever collected?
SETH STEPHENS-DAVIDOWITZ is an economist and former Google data scientist. He is the author of the New York Time best-selling book, Everybody Lies: What The Internet Can Tell Us About Who We Really Are.

PANEL
Recalibrating big tech’s moral compass
In recent times the narrative around technology as intrinsically positive has shifted as it becomes apparent that ‘big tech’ lies at the centre of many ethical issues we face as a society. How do we regulate the unaccountable power of the tech giants and get them to take ethics seriously? Is it time to re-evaluate the role technology plays in our lives ? Where are the opportunities for digital optimism?

Rise and resist
How to change the world
“We can begin to take our freedom back. Marches are on the rise because of the political climate, and mounting fears that if we don’t start doing right by Mother Nature it will be too late, but also because we yearn to reconnect.”
The political march is back in a big way, as communities rally to build movements for environmental and social justice. Crossing the globe, CLARE PRESS met the passionate change-makers using increasingly creative strategies to make their voices heard. From eco warriors and zero wasters to knitting nannas and introvert craftivists they are all united by a grand purpose: to rethink how we live today to build a more sustainable tomorrow.
CLARE PRESS is a journalist, podcaster and ethical fashion activist. In 2018, she was named Vogue Australia’s sustainability editor—the first in the world.

#ThisFlag
The hashtag that stopped a nation
In May 2016, Pastor EVAN MAWARIRE posted a video of himself, draped in the Zimbabwean flag, expressing his frustration with the rampant corruption, injustice, and poverty in his country. A subsequent series of videos using #ThisFlag went viral, sparking mass protests and a nationwide strike that brought cities around the country to a standstill. Evan was arrested and charged with inciting public disorder. Thousands gathered at the courts demanding his release. He was acquitted but then arrested several more times and faced over 60 years in prison on numerous charges of attempting to overthrow the government. In November 2017 he was instrumental in organising the protest march that led to Robert Mugabe’s resignation.
CLARE and EVAN will be in conversation with author and journalist MADONNA KING

Beyond the propaganda
What does Kim Jong Un want — and why?
For the first six years of his rule, North Korea’s Kim Jong Un defied and terrorized the world by building and testing ever more threatening nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. Then, in late 2017, he declared North Korea’s nuclear program a success — and in 2018, embarked on a charm offensive that so far has included summits with the leaders of China, South Korea and the United States. But is he truly willing to give up his nuclear weapons, as US President Donald Trump claims, or has he snookered the world’s leaders into what could be a dangerous deceit? Looking beyond the propaganda and theater, what do we need to know about daily life in enigmatic, cloistered North Korea in order to understand what Kim Jong Un is aiming to accomplish?
JEAN LEE is an award-winning, Pulitzer-nominated writer, commentator and expert on North Korea who serves as director of the Hyundai Motor-Korea Foundation Center for Korean History and Public Policy at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. She led the Associated Press news agency’s coverage of the Korean Peninsula as bureau chief from 2008 to 2013. In 2011, she became the first American reporter granted extensive access on the ground in North Korea. Jean has made dozens of extended reporting trips to North Korea, visiting farms, factories, schools, military academies and homes in the course of her exclusive coverage across the country.

Special event: Banking with integrity
Fees for no service, lying to the regulators, questionable lending practices, “modifying” independent reports, providing misleading, financial advice , enabling money laundering, forging signatures, taking bribes…
The revelations from both the Royal Commission into the Banking and Financial Services Industry and the APRA Inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank have been nothing short of staggering. Heads have rolled, reputations have been left in tatters. It will be months, if not years, before the true extent of the fallout is fully understood. How could it have become so bad or has it always been thus?
